All Christians have heard of the devil, who is often called Lucifer. However, not everyone knows who he was before he became the devil and what job he had in Heaven.

In this article, you will find answers to these questions.

Origin

Lucifer is just one of the names of Satan. Translated from Latin, it means “light– bringing”, or the morning star, – the greatest of angels created by God.

At a certain moment, becoming proud, he wanted to become higher than God, for which he was cast down from Heaven.

What Did Lucifer Do in Heaven?

What Was Lucifer's Job in Heaven

According to John of Damascus, Lucifer was put to guard the whole of Earth.

In the book of Isaiah, it’s written that Lucifer was a cherub, meaning that he was a guardian angel. He was appointed by God to a special role.

This role was one of the most important and prestigious roles in heaven, and it involved overseeing the throne of God and guarding the Garden of Eden.

Lucifer is also described as having been a musician. In the book of Ezekiel, it is written that he was the lead singer in the choir of angels who sang before the throne of God.

The beauty of his singing was so great that it could cause the earth to shake.

“All your pomp has been brought down to the grave, along with the noise of your harps; maggots are spread out beneath you and worms cover you.” (Isaiah 14:11)

We can see that Lucifer had a very beautiful and important job, he was responsible for leading the angels in singing hymns of praise and adoration to God.

Being Close to God

evangelion- being close to God

Being close to the Creator, he conveyed to Him the prayers coming from the lower angels. Absolutely devoid of self-esteem, Lucifer fulfilled all thoughts of God without exception.

With special self-forgetfulness, he also conveyed the will of the Creator to the entire angelic army. For everyone, Lucifer was the embodiment of absolute divine virtue. And the fame and love for him only grew and became stronger.

God has allowed angels to make choices. They could choose what to do themselves, even though they were the embodiment of all God’s desires and fulfilled His will.

God endowed Lucifer with incredible beauty and free will. As a result, Lucifer began to admire himself and became proud.

Lucifer wanted to get into the place of the Creator, he began to believe that he was worthy of it. In Isaiah 14:13-14, we can read the following:

«And he said in his heart: For you said to yourself, ‘I will ascend to heaven and set my throne above God’s stars. I will preside on the mountain of the gods far away in the north. I will climb to the highest heavens and be like the Most High.»

It was not enough for him to control only the earth, he wanted to become higher than God. He decided to become the master of everything that the Lord created.

This desire led him to rebel against God and he made a third of the angels in heaven revolt against the Lord.

The War Between Satan And Archangel Michael.

Because of the revolt started the war between Satan and Archangel Michael. As a result, Lucifer and the other angels who took his side were cast down from heaven to Earth. Lucifer became the devil, and the fallen angels became demons.

“Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.” (Revelation 12:7-9).

As a result of his rebellion, Lucifer was cast out of Heaven and into hell, where he became known as Satan or a ruler of Hell. Thus, some of the angels, including Lucifer, ended up in hell.

After The Fall

hell - after the fall of Satan

Lucifer became the ruler of hell and is now known as Satan, the Devil, or the Tempter. His main work is to lead people away from God into sin.

His first victim was Eva. Before that, the concept of “sin” didn’t exist. The Lord was more powerful and stronger than the fallen angel. But Lucifer was also much stronger than former lower angels, who gave him their admiring love.

Deprived of their former powers, the devil and demons began to torment people with the help of temptation and they succeeded when it happened to Adam and Eva.

Satan can’t negatively affect a believer who goes to church, confesses, and participates in Communion. Such a person will reject any devilish temptation, otherwise, he will immediately repent with all his heart and God will forgive his sin.

“If people, at least went to a confessor and confessed, then the demonic influence would disappear, and they would be able to think again. After all, now, because of the demonic influence, they are not even able to think with their heads. Repentance, confession deprives the devil of rights over a person” (Saint Paisios of Mount Athos).

No Power And Authority Over A Chirstian

Lucifer has no power and authority over a person who turns to the Lord for help and tries to keep the Commandments of God.

On the contrary, if a person doesn’t attach special importance to his spiritual life, then Satan has great power and leads a person to hell.

“Contradiction, stubbornness, willfulness, disobedience, shamelessness – all these are the distinctive features of the devil. A person becomes vulnerable to demonic influence as much as he has the features listed above.

However, when a person’s soul is cleansed, the Holy Spirit enters into him, and the person is filled with Grace” (Saint Paisios of Mount Athos)

Lucifer is also constantly at war with God and his angels and is destined to be defeated.

Final Thoughts

Before his fall from grace, Lucifer was a high-ranking angel in heaven who had important roles. He was a cherub who guarded the throne of God, as well as a worship leader and singer of hymns.

However, his pride and desire for power led him to rebel against God, resulting in his fall from heaven and transformation into the Devil. Thus, the angel with the most attractive appearance and a high position became the embodiment of horror and sin.
